That Gurley Ride
That Gurley Ride
June 5, 20218:00 am - 3:00 pm
Though some believe Gurley Street to be named for the many brothels once found along historic Whiskey Row, it was actually named for Arizona’s first territorial governor, John A. Gurley. Ironically, Gurley never had a chance to set foot in Prescott, having died before his bags were even packed (but even he would agree it’s well worth the visit). The Gurley Street Grill is one of our favorite lunch stops and you can’t beat the ride up from the Valley. Mark “PrimaDyna” Turnquist is taking us to lunch via the Skull Valley and Iron Springs Rd into Prescott. After lunch, we’ll head back down White Spar and hit the switchbacks on the 89 as we make our way home. Should be a great day full of twisty fun!
Meets at Circle K (2575 Sonoran Desert Dr, 303 & I-17) @ 8:00am, KSU 8:30am
RC – Mark “PrimaDyna” Turnquist
Approximate miles – 212 (Round trip)
Ride difficulty – Advanced (Mountain grades and numerous curves)
Ever heard the one about the Mormon, the buffalo and the squirrel? Probably not and neither have we, but we have heard tell that our own Eddie “Squirrel” Galacci is taking us on a lunch ride up to the cool pines for lunch at the rustic Mormon Lake Lodge. Originally built in 1924, Tombler’s Lodge burned to the ground in 1974 and was rebuilt with the assistance of the local rancher community (their brands are still burned into the walls today as a form of protection for the lodge). This is a really cool location with a western feel made more authentic by the nearby sprawling ranches and wildlife. It should be a nice ride out of the valley to escape the heat and after lunch you can check out the nearby buffalo habitat before making the ride back down the hill.

This week seems to be cosmically against us taking a ride up north to get high this weekend! Due to the current excessive heat, wildfire road closures at our destination, and lions, and tigers, and the bears, and all the dogs and cats living together, we are postponing Saturday’s Picnic ride toSnowbowl. We will do a shorter breakfast ride earlier in the morning instead. Tryahwill be leading us on a scenic, 50 mile ride ending at Times Square forbreakfast. Please Note the earlierstart time.
